Build a Life That Can Carry Your Calling

By Cathie Ostapchuk

We spend a great deal of time helping women discover their calling. I am increasingly convinced we need to spend just as much time helping them build a life capable of carrying it.

Because calling without an honest understanding of capacity eventually becomes crushing. Calling without boundaries can turn into resentment. Calling without rest becomes exhaustion. Calling without community becomes isolation. And calling disconnected from the woman God actually created you to be can become one more impressive life that does not quite fit.

In Gather Circles Module 2, YOU, SUSTAINED, women move through a simple but demanding set of questions. What am I carrying that is too heavy? Where have I confused constant availability with faithfulness? What season am I actually in? When did I last rest without proving I had earned it? Who holds my hands up when mine grow tired?

None of those questions diminishes calling. They help give it structure.

Jethro says something striking to Moses in Exodus 18: “What you are doing is not good.” He is not questioning Moses’ calling; he is questioning the structure around it. The task is too heavy to carry alone. The answer is not to care less or work harder. The answer is to build differently.

That is the kind of formation we want to cultivate at Gather. We are not simply trying to get more women into more rooms. We want women to enter those rooms whole — rooted in Christ, clear about who they are, able to recognize their limits, surrounded by people who know them, and increasingly able to carry responsibility without losing themselves beneath it.

This is why The Studio exists: a deeper formation space for women leaders to clarify calling, strengthen the inner life beneath their leadership, receive coaching and walk alongside other women who understand the weight of leading.

This is why Gather Circles are launching: because formation belongs in community. Women need places to open Scripture, tell the truth, ask questions, practice new rhythms and become together.

And this is why we are gathering November 6–7 for BEHOLD. Ten years into the Gather story, we want to give thanks for what God has done, but we do not want to live facing backward. We want to ask what the next decade could look like if women across Canada were deeply discipled, faithfully formed, generously supported and released to serve the Church and the world.

A sustainable life is not a weightless life. It is a life with structure: honest capacity, real boundaries, honoured seasons, protected rest and people who hold our hands up when ours grow tired.

Your calling matters. So does the life carrying it.

We are building for both.
