Maybe the Armour Doesn’t Fit

Some of the things exhausting us were never bad things. They were simply never ours. Someone else’s pace. Someone else’s definition of success. Someone else’s way of leading, speaking, building, mothering, ministering or carrying responsibility. We admired it, learned from it, perhaps even succeeded inside it for a while. And because the armour looked impressive, we assumed the problem must be us when we could no longer move freely inside it.
In 1 Samuel 17, David is preparing to face Goliath when Saul dresses him in his own armour. It is good armour. Royal armour. Proven armour. But David tries to walk in it and realizes he cannot. So he takes it off. He reaches instead for what he knows: his staff, his sling and five smooth stones. The tools look less impressive, but they belong in his hands.
That story has become one of the conversations at the heart of Gather Circles. What armour have we inherited or borrowed? What version of leadership have we assumed we must become? And what are the stones already in our hands — the experiences, gifts, convictions, scars, wisdom and particular ways God has been forming us all along?
This matters because formation is not about manufacturing a more impressive woman. It is about becoming more deeply the woman God actually created. Self-awareness is part of faithfulness. So is discernment. So is having the courage to take off something that may be perfectly good and admit that it is not yours.
This is also why we created The Studio. The women who come are not empty vessels waiting for someone to tell them who to be. They are women already carrying calling, responsibility, questions, gifts and stories. The Studio gives them a year to listen more closely to God, to themselves and to wise women walking alongside them; to clarify what is theirs to carry; and to become more grounded as they lead.
If you have been circling The Studio, wondering whether this is your year, this is the moment to decide. Applications for the 2026–27 cohort close August 15, and only a few places remain. Perhaps you do not need another leadership formula. Perhaps you need room to take off the armour, pick up your own stones and walk into the next season as yourself.
And if The Studio is not your next step, stay close. Gather Circles are coming this fall — small places of Scripture, honest conversation and formation where women can be known before they are needed. Then, November 6–7, we will gather the wider Gather family for BEHOLD: a weekend to celebrate ten years of God’s faithfulness and look toward what He may be inviting us to build next.
We believe a more beautiful Church is possible. And we believe it will be strengthened by women who know who they are, whose they are, and what God has actually placed in their hands.
