It’s Not Nothing
By Cathie Ostapchuk
There are seasons when a woman can begin to wonder whether her place in the story really matters.
The work no one applauds. The conversation no one knows you had. The prayer you keep praying. The leadership you offer without a title. The idea you cannot quite shake. The child you are raising, the team you are building, the church you are serving, the business you are leading, the community you are tending. The quiet yes you keep giving God.
It can feel small.
But it’s not nothing.
When we trace the biblical story from Genesis onward, something remarkable emerges: again and again, the redemptive story of God moves forward through the faith, courage, presence and obedience of women.
A woman is woven into the promise of the serpent-crushing Messiah. Hagar, abandoned in the wilderness, becomes the first and only person in the Old Testament recorded as giving God a name. Tamar, the Hebrew midwives, Rahab, Ruth and Esther act courageously at decisive moments to preserve the line through which the Redeemer will come.
And then Jesus comes.
Elizabeth and Mary are among the first to believe the astonishing news. Elizabeth recognizes the presence of Messiah. Mary gives us the New Testament's first great song of praise. The Samaritan woman recognizes Jesus as Messiah and runs to tell her community. Women use their own resources to sustain Jesus and the Twelve.
This is not nothing.
Women were not decorative figures standing at the edges of God's story. Their courage mattered. Their discernment mattered. Their resources mattered. Their voices mattered. Their yes mattered.
And yours does too.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
There are works God has prepared for you. People you are uniquely positioned to influence. Conversations that need your voice. Places where your presence changes what is possible. Acts of courage and obedience that may look ordinary today but whose impact you cannot yet see.
So please, woman of God, don’t shrink back.
You were made for moments that have your name on them.
Not because you need to prove that you are something. Not because you need a bigger platform, louder voice or more impressive title. But because the God who created you has already written purpose into your life.
Perhaps your yes will never be recorded in history.
But neither was every prayer of Mary’s. Every courageous decision of Esther’s. Every ordinary day of Ruth’s faithfulness. Every conversation the Samaritan woman had after she ran back into town.
We see only fragments.
God sees the whole story.
And this is why Gather exists.
This month, Gather Circles are launching - places for real women in real life to gather around tables, tell the truth about their stories, hear one another, grow together and discern what God may be inviting them into next.
And in January 2027, BEHOLD will gather us again. We are taking the time to create something worthy of the story we want to tell: the story of women across our nation who have risen with courage, carried influence faithfully, found their voices, taken their places and said yes to God in a thousand different ways.
Because her place in the story is not nothing.
Your place in the story is not nothing.
It is something.
Something holy.
Something entrusted.
Something worth stewarding.
Something worth celebrating.
And we will.
